  • An offshoot of my botanical product line, I started making this micro batch tallow balm long before tallow got trendy and mass-produced! Inspired by northern Manitoba miners but safe and effective for everyone especially those with sensitive, reactive, or compromised skin, this protective balm is a must-have.

Handcrafted with natural and certified organic ingredients (no essential oils, added fragrance or colorants, petroleum products, chemicals or preservatives), this extremely rich and deeply moisturizing formula uses slow rendered organic grass-fed beef tallow to provide easily absorbed nutrients including vitamins A, D, E, K and B1 as well as conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) which has anti-inflammatory and healing properties. Cocoa butter provides plant-based moisturizing fatty acids and nutrients along with a warm chocolate aroma.

What is tallow and why use it on my skin?

Tallow is rendered kidney fat (or suet) from cows, bison, deer and other ungulates (grass eaters). It is NOT lard, which is pig fat. Suet tallow has been used in various forms for hundreds of years as a skin treatment. NOT ALL TALLOW IS CREATED EQUAL - only grass-fed animals create fat containing beneficial nutrients. This balm does not contain tallow from grain, corn or by-product fed animals. This balm also does not include mixed fats or trimmings, which are often yellow in color, have a characteristic 'beef' smell, and are cheaper with fewer beneficial skin nutrients.

Tallow is so effective and restorative because it is made of the same amino acids and cellular components that your skin contains, so it can be effectively absorbed to deliver direct nutrients and promote real healing. Store bought treatments just coat your skin and are often made of petroleum-based mineral oils or synthetic silicones.

I source tallow from Saskatchewan grass-fed beef cattle raised on certified organic farms subject to ethical and sustainable farming practices, free of antibiotics and growth hormones. It is slow-rendered and purified at low temperatures to preserve the integrity of the nutrients and enzymes. I consider tallow a zero-waste ingredient, as it is often discarded - I transform it into an extremely beneficial skin-friendly balm with immense benefits.
